Sociolinguistics and Arizona Controversy

This controversy is about a city council candidate in Yuma, Arizona who was barred from running for office because she didn't speak English proficiently.  The case went to court, and the court brought in "sociolinguistics expert William Eggington, a professor at Brigham Young University," who "presented the court with results of three different tests he administered to Cabrera."  If you want to know more details, here's a link to the story, which also appeared in the New York Times and many other newspapers. It is worthy to note that with all the sociolinguistics and forensic linguistics experts in the state of Arizona and the nation that our very own Bill Eggington was chosen as the expert in this case.
