The necessary criteria are staed below for your assignment type. If you did text summaries for project threee then consult "text summaries" below, and so forth for your specific assignment type.

Points possible for 3rd project regardless of assignment type...

190-200 points- Exceptional. Meets all of the necessary criteria.
180-189 points-Good. Fulfilled the assignment, but lacking in a few of the necessary areas.
160-179 points- Average. Needs more attention. Deficient in several of the necessary areas.
0-159 points- Less than Satisfactory. Deficient in most of the necessary areas.

-Text Summary Grading Criteria

Grading is done on a holistic scale by the following criteria:

Your text summaries must contain...

  1. At least five (Project 1) or twelve (Project 3) summaries
  2. A full page of concrete examples from the chapter
  3. An accurate, authorial interpretations for each concrete example.
  4. A Topic question that is concise, specific, clear, and relevant to the article at hand
  5. A Thesis that answers the above Topic Question
  6. The Topic and Thesis are, in the judgement of the grader, accurate.
  7. Typed, Double column format, in brad-closing binder as shown.
  8. Turned in promptly (i.e. during class on the due date).
Points possible per summary...
24-25 points- Exceptional. Meets all of the above criteria.
22-23 points- (Very) Good. Fulfilled the assignment, but lacking in a few of the above areas.
20-21 points- (Above) Average. Needs more attention. Deficient in several of the above areas.
0-19 points- Less than Satisfactory. Deficient in most of the above areas.

NOTICE: No assignment with format deficiencies can get more than 22 points in the best case scenario.

 -Illustrative Story Grading Criteria

Grading is done on a holistic scale by the following criteria:

The illustrative story must ...

  1. be 750+ words (for Project 2) or 1500+ words (for Project 3)
  2. have a Conflict
  3. have Development/ Supporting Detail that leads to a Resolution (not just repeating the Conflict over and over again)
  4. have a Resolution
  5. have a balance of dialog, action, description, and author-to-reader information. No one of these should take precedence in the story
  6. correctly illustrate a linguistic principle hitherto studied in Ling230 (i.e. I should see that you understand the principle)
  7. NOT incorporate common writing traps, like "talking-heads," "screenplay," "dream sequence," "fairy-tale re-write," "twilight zone ending"
  8. Interesting, enjoyable, and worth reading.
  9. Typed with readble font and spacing, in brad-closing binder as shown.
  10. Turned in promptly (i.e. during class on the due date).

93-100 points- Exceptional. Meets all of the above criteria.
85-92 points- (Very) Good. Fulfilled the assignment, but lacking in a few of the above areas.
76-84 points- (Above) Average. Needs more attention. Deficient in several of the above areas.
60-74 points- Less than Satisfactory. Deficient in most of the above areas.
59-0 points- unacceptable. Deficient in almost all areas.

-Syntactic Imitation Grading Criteria

Grading is done on a holistic scale by the following criteria:

Your Syntactic Imitation must...

  1. be 100+ words (Project 2) or 200+ words (Project 3)
  2. be in the format outlined on the Sytactic Analysis explanation page.
  3. have adhered to the guidelines on the Sytactic Analysis explanation page
  4. be from a stylistically distinct author.
  5. be cohesive and flow naturally, not be disjointed or non-sequitur.
  6. have correctly identified the parts of speech
  7. have correctly marked the clause boundaries
  8. have correctly identified subject and predicate
  9. have correctly substituted words of the correct part of speech in your own imitation.
  10. Typed in brad-closing binder as shown.
Points possible per summary...
93-100 points- Exceptional. Meets all of the above criteria.
85-92 points- (Very) Good. Fulfilled the assignment, but lacking in a few of the above areas.
76-84 points- (Above) Average. Needs more attention. Deficient in several of the above areas.
60-75 points- Less than Satisfactory. Deficient in most of the above areas.
0-59 points- Unacceptable. Deficient in all of the above areas.
