Teaching:
Before beginning this activity be sure that the Ss understand the necessary vocabulary terms in the reading. Vocabulary to be reviewed for this particular text are in bold print.
DRTA Activity
Next we will read a story together. While we read I will ask you some questions. For example, the story is called, "Once There Was A BullΣ(frog)." What do you think this story is about? Ss respond. "What makes you think so?" Ss respond. Let,s go on.
Using the "Once There Was A BullΣ(frog)" transparency T reads the story aloud. Cover the transparency so that only the sections being read can be seen. At each break in the story T asks: What do you think this story is about? What do you think will happen next? and What makes you think so?
Conclusion:
Explain that the Ss have been predicting in reading~a skill that good readers always use.
Evaluation:
"What Comes Next?" quiz. As an outside/ homework assignment Ss complete the quiz. It can be graded by partners the next day in class. Ss should answer with 90% accuracy.

Once There Was A BullΣ(frog)

Once there was a bullΣ
frog who had lost his hop. He looked under a toadΣ
stool. But his hop wasn,t there. He looked behind a dogΣ
house. But his hop wasn,t there. He looked under a hedgeΣ
hog. But his hop wasn,t there. "Maybe if I jump off something I,ll find my
hop," he said, so he climbed on top of a boxΣ
car and jumped! He landed hard in a patch of grassΣ
hoppers. They hopped away, but Bullfrog didn,t. "Not high enough," said
Bullfrog. "Maybe if someone threw meI,d go high enough to get my hop back."
"I,ll do it," said a cowΣ
boy, who loved to throw things, and he picked up Bullfrog and tossed him
high and far. Bullfrog tumbled through the air and landed in a field of
strawΣ
berries. "Oof!" Then he tried to hop. He couldn,t. "Oh, woe," said
Bullfrog. "I,ve lost my hop!"
"Then swim," said a catΣ
fish from the stream nearby. "I can,t swim on land," said Bullfrog. "Then
fly," said a lady&Sigm
bug who heard Bullfrog complain. "I can,t, said Bullfrog. "I have no wings.
And without wing, flying hurts."
"You could slither," said a voice behind Bullfrog. He turned and looked. On
the ground behind him was a diamondΣ
back rattlesnake looking for breakfast. "A snake!" croaked Bullfrog. And up
into the air he leaped, higher than the sunΣ
flowers around him. And when he came down, he leaped again. And again. And
again. Until he landed on a stageΣ
coach. "I,ve found it! I,ve found my hop!" said Bullfrog as he rode out of
town and far from the snake. "And after all that hopping, I,m so hungry I
could eat a horseΣ
fly!" And he did.
