Requirements for an approved editing internship site

  • The internship should involve application of editing/writing principles and enhance learning about communication or publication processes.
  • The internship provider must provide a qualified supervisor who will oversee your work and give you feedback. If a supervisor will not be available, you will need to find a qualified faculty advisor to supervise you.
  • The site must be approved by the editing internship coordinator.
  • If the internship site is off-campus, an Internship Master Agreement must be on file with the Internship Office. (For further information, see the following checklists.)

Preregistration Checklist

These steps should be done the semester before the internship begins.

1. Very important: Review the frequently asked questions on this web site, paying particular attention to those that apply to you.

If the internship opening is posted on this web site, skip steps 2-4.

2. If the prospective internship provider is off campus, check to see if that provider has signed an Internship Master Agreement. To do so, search the list at http://saas.byu.edu/internships/. On-campus providers do not have to sign this agreement.
Note: If the off-campus provider has not signed an Internship Master Agreement, you will need to print off a copy, have it signed by the provider, and turn it in to the editing internship coordinator before the internship site can be approved. (For more information, see the frequently asked questions.)

3. Contact the prospective internship provider to determine that a position is available and that a qualified supervisor is willing and able to manage your training as well as report your progress to the editing internship coordinator.

4. Obtain approval for the internship by consulting with the editing internship coordinator.

5. Apply for the internship.

6. If the internship provider will not have a supervisor available, ask a qualified faculty member to supervise you.

7. Fill out the online Internship Application form.
a. Go to the class schedule for the semester or term you want to register for.
b. In the class schedule, find ELang 399.
c. Above Elang 399 click on the blue link that says Internship Application.
d. Completely fill out the Welcome page.
e. Completely fill out application form itself and submit it.

8. Send an email to me telling me how many credit hours you want. You must work 45 hours total for one credit hour. The amount of homework varies according to the number of hours you register for and whether this is a repeat internship. If you want to review the assignments before making a decision, select Assignments under For Students on this website.

9. IMPORTANT! If within 48 hours you do not receive an email telling you that the application has been approved, please call the BYU Internship Office and ask for IRAMS technical support. Follow their instructions.

10. Introduce yourself to your internship supervisor, or inform your employer that you are receiving internship for your work. Provide copies of your internship assignments or any basic information your supervisor needs to clarify your status as an intern. Also discuss the fact that the supervisor will need to fill out two short evaluation forms.
