Description
In our effort to reach out to all in the community who need our help and to encourage the community to do the same, we require that our website, materials, and resources be accessible to those who are not native English speakers. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, we rely on the help of unpaid volunteers and interns to further our work.
Our clients come to us in a variety of ways, including our weekly intake process. Many who contact us receive resource referrals via mail, yet these resources are currently only available in English. We would like these resources to be generally available in Spanish, and on a case-by-case basis in other languages, like Portuguese, Russian, Korean, etc.
Clients in our Prisoners' Rights Program contact us through the mail. We receive 10-15 pieces of unsolicited mail from incarcerated Texans each day. Many of these letters come to us in other languages and require responses in that language. Additionally, resources provided to these persons are mainly available in English. The few Spanish versions available need streamlining and
Additionally, the VAWA program assists Spanish, Russian, Mandarin, Korean and Vietnamese speakers.
Generally, immigrant spouses of United States Citizens and Legal Permanent Residents can rely on their spouse to petition Immigration for them in order to obtain status in the United States. In the context of an abusive relationship, however, immigration status simply becomes another means by which an abuser can control a victim of domestic violence. Our office helps women (and men) in abusive relationships to submit immigration petitions on their own behalf. One of the key components of this self-petitioning process is a 'declaration.' Declarations are written by the self-petitioners and are their chance to tell Immigration their story; why they married their abuser, and what the abuse entailed.
The declarations generally need to be translated twice; first, from the client's first language into English, so that we can put them in the correct format and so that we can be sure they include all of the details Immigration requires. Once we have a completed English draft of the declaration, we then have it translated back into the client's first language and send it to the client so that he or she can review it and be sure that it is a) factually correct; b) true to the client's voice and experience.
VAWA-specific resources for these clients need translation as well.
There is a lot of work to be done!
This internship can be completed on- or off-site, according to the intern's preference. We are happy to coordinate with your school to ensure you meet the school's internship requirements while working with us.

Description
We are looking for 3-4 student interns to make an immediate impact with the messaging from colleges to students. Starting the end of Jan., or when able, you will help create and edit messages per the specification requests of colleges. Zinch students will receive these messages and start interacting with the colleges. You will have the responsibility to properly represent the college to the high school students. Most messages are 3-5 short paragraphs long. The messages must be persuasive, engaging and to the point. High school students have short attention spans and colleges have a lot to share. We need to present the info in a way that engages the student with the college encouraging them to learn more from that college.
Compensation
None
Qualifications
Hours: Flexible. You will have the option to work remotely or in the offices once properly trained. You can work early morning, late night or during the day. As your responsibility will be to write/edit messages, we care about the quality of the messages, not where or when you do it. Close communication is still necessary if not working in the offices. Meeting once a week in the offices will be required.
Application Process
Please send any questions/inquiries to brad@zinch.com who will help you get started and clear up any other questions you still have.
