The HPS Faculty Editing Service can help faculty members polish manuscripts in order to improve the chances that the manuscripts will be accepted for publication.
Advanced editing students edit the manuscripts first; an experienced editor then reviews the students’ work to ensure that the manuscripts are edited well and to give feedback and mentoring to the students.
Manuscripts receive a relatively light edit:
-Our focus is on grammar, usage, punctuation, organization, and clarity.
-We don’t check references for accuracy, but at your request we will ensure that your references match the preferred style of the target publication.
-BYU faculty and staff may submit manuscripts.
-Manuscripts may be of any length.
The service is free to faculty members whose colleges support the service (currently the College of Humanities; the College of Family, Home, and Social Sciences; and the Marriot School of Management). Other colleges support their faculty’s use of the service on a case-by-case basis, so check with your dean about the possibility of such support.
Fees cover the time spent by the service’s part-time professional editors in reviewing and polishing the students’ work; because student interns edit the manuscripts first, these editors can review the manuscript more quickly, primarily to ensure the quality of the students’ work. You can estimate the fee based on approximately 5 to 10 double-spaced pages per hour (depending on the amount of editing needed), at $27.50 per hour.

After we review your manuscript, we will give you an estimate of the time required (and, if necessary, the fee). We will make every effort to meet any deadlines you have, but because our work includes training students, the turnaround time may be slightly longer than it would be otherwise.
