Logistic Regression Homework

In an experiment, subjects heard sentences such as the following:

Sentence A

Sentence B

After hearing a sentence they had to repeat it three times. Their three sentences were recorded and their pronunciation of word-final /t/ observed in each case. Download the data here by right clicking. Perform a logistic regression analysis using GoldVarb. See the instructions here.

Dependent variable: The pronunciation of /t/ (?=glottal, t=[t], d=flap, *=can't tell)

Independent variables:

Age: (2=20s, 3=30s, 4=40s)

Region of origin (w=west, o=other)

Repetition (1=first, 2=second, 3=third)

Vowel after /t/ (B=back, F=front)

Make sure to enter glottal stop (“?”) as the dependent variable and to follow all the steps in the instructions.

  1. Do the best stepping up and best stepping down runs match? What does this mean?

  2. What independent variable is eliminated? What does this mean?

  3. Give me the numeric results of the best stepping up run.

  4. What independent variables influenced people to pronounce glottal stops?

  5. In prose, interpret the numbers for me. Explain what each one indicates about the influence of each of the independent variables on glottalizing of /t/.
