Criteria for TESOL Academic Internships
The TESOL internship has been offered to provide you with the opportunity to complete a set of tasks and projects that exposes you to the breadth of teaching assignments and responsibilities. All TESOL internships approved for academic credit must meet the following criteria:
• Increase your marketability to employers. On average, only 30 percent of graduating seniors have job offers before graduation; however, after students complete an internship, that figure rises to 58 percent
• The student has completed all the courses for the TESOL minor, earning at least a C- grade. (Concurrent enrollment is also possible.)
• The internship consists of an assignment to teach English in a classroom setting. While tutoring (whether face-to-face or online) is a worthwhile endeavor, tutoring alone will not meet the criteria for a TESOL internship
• 126 hours will be completed at the internship site. These hours include time spent teaching English (or assisting another teacher) as well as in preparation and school meetings. In addition, time spent on assessing students and developing materials may also be included. The intern will submit a log with the hours completed during the internship, verified by the supervisor, as well as reflection papers focused on how the intern has applied concepts learned in classes to this real-world context. Two-thirds of the hours are expected to be contact hours where the interns are interacting with students: teaching an ESL class, testing, tutoring, assisting a supervisor in the classroom, ESL activities (such as a field-trip, workplace instruction, library help, a party, conversations, etc., with the emphasis on teaching). Preparation and training hours, the other one-third of the internship hours, can consist of preparation for ESL classes, on-site training and staff meetings, ELang 496R class assignments, workshops, conferences, extra readings or reflections.
• The internship site must have a designated staff person with a degree in TESOL or a related field and a minimum of six months post-graduation experience to function as a supervisor overseeing the intern. The supervisor provides assistance to the intern to help coordinate what the intern will do (e.g., which classes he/she teaches or who he/she will work with) and provides information that the intern might need. The supervisor also verifies the hours that the intern submits (done via email) and submits a short online survey evaluation of the intern (a document will be provided) at the internship midpoint and then again at the completion of the internship.
