Degree: TESOL MA
Thesis/Project: Creation and Evaluation of the Basic College Skills Transition Curriculum for Adult Literacy Students at Project Read.
What have you done since graduation: I’ve worked for Educational Testing Service (ETS) scoring TOEIC Speaking items. I’ve tutored EFL students online. I have also taught as an adjunct instructor at Dixie State University.
Future goals/plans: My goal is to start teaching a community ESL class in my rural Nevada town of Mesquite. There are several venues that have hosted ESL classes in the past (library, community, college, churches), but none of them are currently offering any courses. I’d like to get one started up again to serve the needs of the community.
Advice for future graduate students: Plan to finish your thesis much earlier than you have to. Then, if you end up taking longer than you thought you would, you’ll still have plenty of time to complete the necessary steps. And submit work to your advisor often! It can be tempting to not check in when you don’t feel confident/happy with the work you’ve accomplished. But that’s the best time to check in and get direction for your work from someone who has a stronger idea of how your work will be evaluated.
