Listening Lesson Plan

Listening for Meaning: Same Sound

Teacher: Tracy Woods

Date: October 14, 1997

Objective:

  • To help students determine meaning from conversation.
  • After seeing possibilities of meaning, connected with previous grammar lessons, and completing 2 activities, the students will be able to determine contraction source and meaning with 80% accuracy.

Materials:

  • Chalkboard
  • Worksheets
  • Tape and evaluation sheet (make sure tape and player are in working condition, prior to class)

Warm-up

Taped conversation using contraction "’d" meaning "had" in the past perfect tense and with "better" or "would" as a modal or with "rather".

Intro:

How many of you understood this conversation completely?

How many of you got confused, a little, with the meaning of the contraction "’d"? Several of you have come to me about this exact problem. After our grammar lessons on the past perfect tense, the modal auxiliary "would", and the idioms "had better" and "would rather".

Explain:

The words "had" and " would" both use the contraction "’d".

Teaching:

Show the two primary words "had" and "would" and their usage. Discuss meanings, paying special attention to distinguishing each from the other by focusing on the word following the contraction.

Activity #1 Worksheet with examples.

Activity #2 Worksheet of exercises from warm-up tape, done in pairs.

Evaluation:

Third worksheet to complete with taped sentences. Answers given and students self-grade their worksheets. Discussion of incorrect items. Encouragement given about listening skills.
