Reading Lesson Plan English level: Beginning Background: EFL class, the number of Ss is 12-15 and the age of student is between 8-10. They are all Chinese speakers. The total class hour is five hours per week; Monday through Friday. Object: Teach students able to use and recognize new vocabularies of the weather and a simple writing structure---Today is _____. Materials needed: Clothes, props, radio and tape (sounds of the weather) Styrofoam, Story book, pictures, blackboard, easel, worksheets. Presentation: A. Before reading the story, ask students " how does the weather affect what you wear?", "What do you know about the weather?" (may use Chinese for explain if it is necessary). B. Start reading the story, The weather Chart. During reading T will show the each page and also point out each word in the content. When T read the sentence, she will stress or highlight the last word by using voice stress and also act it out by using props and tape. For example: Today is cold. After T says the word "cold", she will become to tremble and then put some clothes on. C. After the reading T will ask Ss what kinds of weather they like and how this kind of weather make them feel. Ss may answer in Chinese. If it happened, then T will repeat the answers in English (T may need to use body language to emphasis those repeat words). D. Now, T will read the whole book again. Activity: A. have Ss following T to read out the story (It is a drill practice). When T and Ss read the story, T will point out the each word in the story. B. After this activity, T will give a demonstration about each typical reaction under each type of the weather (T will also ask Ss to help create those actions). For example: cold--trembling, hot-- stick tongue out. Make sure most Ss know how to react those actions. C. Divide Ss into two group A and B. Group A will read out the story (T will use picture cards as same as the pictures on the book and put them on the easel). Group B will follow the sentences they hear (they may also look at the pictures) to react the appropriate actions. Two group switch and repeat the same activity. T will also mix those pictures in different order. D. Now, T have or ask some volunteers come up in front of class. The mini-drama will be performed. The activity is having those volunteers stand on a row, rest of the class will read the sentences of pictures and then those volunteers have to act them out. Those volunteers can recreate their new actions if they want to. But make sure those actions need to be reasonable. T may have others volunteers after a certain time. E. Now, T will hand out two worksheets. First one is a matching exercise. Ss need to match each sentence to its picture. Second one Ss need to fill the last word of each sentence which is under each picture. For example: Picture The vocabulary list is on the same sheet as well. Today is ____. T will go around the class to help and monitor Ss. F. An information gap activity: have Ss work in a pairs. Student A and B will have the same little picture cards. A will hold and say the sentence of picture he has and B will point out the picture from his own cards. If B is right, then A will give his card to B. This practice will switch when A's cards all give away. G. Home work: give Ss one-week weather chart. Have Ss record the weather of each day and keep a record of their findings in the following week. Have Ss bring it back next week. They will share their weather chart with other Ss in the class. Evaluation: T can check Ss' comprehension during those activities and also from Ss' worksheets. |
