Reading Lesson Plan

English Level: Higher intermediate to advance. 12~15 students. Age of students is over 16.

Object: To help students quickly search for some particular piece or pieces of information in a text. In those Scanning exercises students will develop the skills of looking for information and finding a certain specific data without reading through the whole text.

Materials Needed:

  • Phonebook
  • informtion sheet
  • Reference index sheet
  • projector
  • Calendar sheet
  • Transparencies
  • Worksheets

Procedures:

A. warn up activity : T shows the phonebook can asks about the function of it. Ss may give some suggestions. Then T asks questions about how to find the specific information such as some's phone number, address, or check certain prices of items. T can also asks the question such as "Do we need to read the whole phonebook to find those answers?" After Ss' response, T brings the topic of the lesson---Scanning; for academic English, scanning is absolutely essential. T should mention about it is important in dealing with genres like reference index, schedules, manuals, calendar, etc.

B. Gives Ss worksheets. T will show the transparency of information index on overhead first.

C. Having Ss read aloud the first question on their worksheet. The first question is "If you want to learn about world religions, where might you look at?" T now points on the reference index transparency, asks "where should we start?" "Should we look at the category of animals or environment?" Ss may give the final correct answer: Religions information. Having Ss read read the next question. The same pattern repeats. Now, T can teach some steps which involved in scanning strategy.

These are following: (write it on the black blackboard)

    1. What: describe exactly what information you are looking for and think about the form it may take.
    2. Where: decide where you need to look to find the information you want. We probably wouldn't look for movie schedules on the front page of the newspaper.
    3. Find it quickly and read it carefully: move your eyes as quickly as possible down the page until you find the information you need. Then read it carefully.
    4. stop: when you find what you need, do not read further.

D. Now T will give four exercises in this topic. Ss will have chance to practice in the carious skills necessary for scanning.

E. In these four exercises, T will give the demonstration in following four steps of scanning strategy in beginning of each exercise. T will hand out both information sheets and worksheets. Having Ss work in a pairs or small groups. After each exercise, T may have Ss to share the answers. Whenever different answers given, T should asks ss how those answers came out. Discusses the possible problems with whole class.

F. After those exercises, Ss should be able to get some ideas about scanning. T gives another four worksheets to Ss with the same information sheets which used in previous exercises. Having Ss take home to finish those homework individually. Ss should bring back in next class.

Evaluation: T may find out whether Ss understand those skills by doing exercises in the class and correcting individual homework.
