We offer Bachelor’s degrees in Linguistics and English Language. We also offer minors in Editing, Linguistics, and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages).

Where can I find information about the majors and minors offered in the Linguistics & English Language Department?

You can find more information about our undergraduate programs here: http://linguistics.byu.edu/undergraduate-programs/. Students may also come into our office in 4064 JFSB and pick up handouts with program information, or if you have more in-depth questions about our programs or the fields of Linguistics and English Language, you are welcome to make appointments with our advisors by emailing them to schedule an appointment or stopping by during their office hours.

How do I declare a major in Linguistics or English Language?

Students wishing to declare a major in either Linguistics or English Language will need to apply online before declaring.  Applications can be found under Linguistics BA and English Language BA respectively.  You will fill out this application and submit it.  We will send a confirmation email to you which you will print out and take down to the advisement center in 1041 JFSB.  There they will add the major to your MAP. We do recommend that you meet with a faculty advisor from our department once you have declared.

How do I declare a minor within the Linguistics & English Language Department?

Students wishing to declare a minor in TESOL or Linguistics need to fill out an online application as well. You will again print out the email confimration and take it to the advisement center in 1041 JFSB.  We do recommend that you do meet with a faculty advisor from our department as well.

Students wishing to declare a minor in Editing will need to fill out the application found at the bottom of the Editing minor page.  Read through all of the information first before filling out the application.  Once you have completed this application, you will print out the email confirmation we will send you and make an appointment with your respective faculty advisor. Advisors generally go by last name.  Contact the faculty member directly to set up an appointment with them.  They will sign your confirmation print out and you will then be able to take it to the advisement center in 1041 JFSB.
