Evaluation Criteria

  1. Includes a self-reflection of the assignment.
  2. Correct and complete bibliographic information in the proper style is provided at the top of the first page of the review. This information includes the number of pages and the price of the book. (check Books In Print for the current price of the text.)
  3. The intended purpose of the text and its target audience are noted and used as an important basis for evaluating the material.
  4. The book’s basic structure (organization, parts, etc.) is clearly described.
  5. Techniques and procedures that teachers using the text are expected to use (as well as cycles of teaching activities) are noted and evaluated.
  6. Anticipated teaching roles of those who use the text are described.
  7. Other relevant, important features of the text are intelligently selected and clearly described, especially if they are unusual.
  8. Key features of the text are critically evaluated (not just described; not just praised).
  9. Supplementary materials (teacher’s manual, tapes, answer key, etc.) are mentioned if they exist.
  10. Comments are appropriately illustrated or supported with examples and sample material from the text itself.
  11. Paragraphs are clearly organized and each is devoted to an important point about the book.
  12. Clear, appropriate vocabulary is employed in the description of the book and the reviewerÕs evaluation of it.
  13. Grammar, spelling, and/or punctuation errors have been edited.
  14. Length is appropriate (two pages, 500 words, recommended; three pages maximum).
  15. Cover letter to prospective journal included for review.

Grading


48-50 points -- Exceptionally well written review. Ready for submission. Meets all the above criteria.
44-47 points -- Very good insights. Fulfilled the assignment, but lacking in a few of the above areas.
40-43 points -- Good ideas, but need more attention. Deficient in several of the above areas.
0-39 points -- Less than satisfactory. Deficient in most of the above areas.
