Course Requirements and Grading Scheme

Course Requirements:
  1. Read synthesize and be prepared to discuss in class the reading assignments.
  2. Complete a statistical analysis critique and oral report from a published article.
  3. Complete MINITAB problems.
  4. Present your thesis research findings to a sub-group of the class.
  5. Complete a draft of chapters 4 and 5 and a revised timeline for your thesis research project.
  6. Participate in the on-line virtual class sessions.
  7. Take the midterm and final exams.
Grading Based On:
  1. Participation and attendance (50 points total)
  2. Statistical analysis critique and oral report (50 points total)
  3. MINITAB problems (5-10 points each; approximately 50 points total)
  4. Oral presentation of thesis research design (50 points)
  5. Thesis chapters 4 and 5 and revised timeline (100 points)
  6. Virtual class participation (50 points)
  7. Midterm exam (50 points total)
  8. Final exam (100 points total)
Notes:
  1. Attendance is taken each class period. Attendance and participation are an essential part of the course. The participation potion of your grade includes completion of the On-Line Student Course Evaluation. You will be notified by email when the evaluations can be completed.

  2. NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED. Work must be submitted at the beginning of class on the day it is due.

  3. Grading of the assignments is done on the following scales:
    48-50 Exceptional insights or critique
    44-47 Good insights or critique; fulfilled the assignment
    40-43 Ideas or critique need more attention
    0 -39 Work not acceptable

  4. Five hundred points are available in LING 600.

  5. Grades will be figured on the following percentage basis:
    93% - 100% = A 72% - 76% = C
    90% - 92% = A- 69% - 71% = C-
    87% - 89% = B+ 67% - 68% = D+
    82% - 86% = B 62% - 66% = D
    79% - 81% = B- 59% - 61% = D-
    77% - 78% = C+ 0% - 58% = F

  6. The BYU policy related to Incomplete grades (I) will be strictly followed. Refer to page 20 of the Fall Semester 2003 Class Schedule for details.

  7. Academic misconduct is not acceptable under any circumstances. Plagiarism or any other form of cheating on any assignment or test will result in an automatic failing grade in the course. Adherence to the BYU Honor Code is expected. See pages 19-21 of the Fall Semester 2003 Class Schedule for details on the Honor Code.

  8. Students with disabilities. If you have any disability which may impair your ability to successfully complete this course, please let me know during the first week of class. Accommodations are coordinated in consultation with the University Accessibility Center and may require medical and/or professional documentation.   9. Preventing Sexual Harassment. Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits sex discrimination against any participant in an educational program or activity that receives federal funds. The act is intended to eliminate sex discrimination in education. Title IX covers discrimination in programs, admissions, activities, and student-to-student sexual harassment.
