This task will introduce you to sound files and the PRAAT speech toolkit.

1. Do exercise 2.1 from p. 14 of the text. Play both cosine.wav and joe.wav.
2. Download PRAAT from this website and install it on your computer by following the appropriate links and instructions.
3. Start up PRAAT.
4. Read in cosine.wav from the CD.
5. Play the file's contents and use the Edit option to view the information. Become familiar with the options available from the menu.
6. Now do the same for the file joe.wav.
7. Download some spoken language files from a non-English language and view them in PRAAT; a useful source for language speech files is this website.

Send an email to lonz@byu.edu immediately if you encounter any problems. Otherwise, send an email by the due date mentioning what you learned, especially about the language files you downloaded and worked with.
