English for Lamanites: An Intermediate ESL Reader, A Walk Toward the Trail of Beauty

The purpose of this thesis is to provide a handbook for future LDS materials writers who would be interested in preparing graded ESL readers for Lamanites. This thesis describes my experiences as I became aware of the need for such texts, and the body of the thesis explains how I prepared a prototype text, accompanying tapes, and questionnaires for a pilot study of the materials in Mexico City. Specific procedures, pitfalls, and suggestions are included as the reader follows the instructional design, development, and implementation steps necessary to produce my prototype text, *English for Lamanites*. Also included are discussions on the nature of the Lamanite audiences, the central messages of *English for Lamanites*, ideas on simplification of reading materials, sample pages from the prototype text, and letters received giving me the copyright permissions. Ultimately, the purpose of both the thesis and of the prototype text is the same: provide a source of motivation to all interested people to go do something to help the Lamanites.
