Feature-Length Interactive Videodisc: A Sampling of Procedures for Making Feature-Length Movies Interactive for Japanese Students of English

The traditional method of English study for Japanese students in Japan has primarily centered on grammar-translation. Even after six years of study, however, few can communicate in English. Among the many reasons for this may be the fact that they find this method of study to be boring. This study began with something that many students find interesting–a Hollywood-type movie–and made it interactive in order to teach English. An inexpensive laser-disc player and computer were used for this purpose. A workbook was also included. The interactive movie was designed for use in language laboratories or at home. Students who used the interactive movie found it to be an interesting and motivating means of study, and they indicated a desire to continue studying English using this method.
